Dr Miranda Mirosa on smart and sustainable packaging

In an article published in the Otago Daily Times, Dr Miranda Mirosa reported on some of the new forms of packaging scientists are developing to deliver food in the best possible condition, and in response to consumer demand to get rid of plastic.  She and University of Otago colleagues Professor Phil Bremer and PhD student Erin Young recently attended a packaging conference in China, where they learnt about myriad forms of smart and sustainable packaging, and different cultural responses.  Dr Mirosa emphasised that packaging is necessary to keep food safe and prevent waste.  Food waste currently makes up about 40% of “rubbish” going to the tip.
