In the latest issue of FoodNZ (the magazine of the NZ Institute of Food Science & Technology) former Government Statistician Len Cook explains why it’s so important that we help young Māori and the booming Māori agri-economy achieve their full potential (page 24). There are tectonic demographic changes happening globally and in New Zealand, with ageing populations, shrinking tax bases, and falling birthrates. A quarter of the population under 20 are Māori and that proportion is likely to increase. The Centre continues to lend science support to iwi on the East Coast, who want to ensure the safety and sustainability of wild food sources.
